About The Welder's Forge
The Welder's Forge is a welding publishing project: an e-book in PDF and free guides for people who want to learn to weld from scratch or put in order what they already know. The English edition is written for US and global readers, from the power supply to the standards and the shop vocabulary.
What it is
At the center is the e-book The Welder's Forge: a manual covering stick, MIG/MAG and TIG, plus flux-cored, oxyacetylene and brazing, with safety, basic metallurgy, defects, inspection, standards and a full section for people who weld at home. Around it you will find the free welding guides on this site. You can read the details of the book on the welding handbook PDF page.
How the material is written
- Standards cited by number: when a text talks about qualification or quality, it names the reference, such as AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, ISO 9606-1 or ANSI Z49.1.
- Reviewed, numbered tables: values are presented as starting points, and the text keeps reminding you that the WPS and the machine manual win.
- Plain language: the reason behind each rule, no needless jargon, with the focus on what works at the bench.
- US-first units: inches first with metric in parentheses, 120 V and 240 V power, AWS electrode designations.
- Safety first: warnings where the risk is real, such as galvanized metal, fuel tanks, electricity, cylinders and hot work.
What it is not
- Not a training school. The e-book is study and reference material, and it does not replace hands-on training.
- It does not issue qualifications. A welder is qualified by a test, under the standard the job requires, witnessed by the responsible party.
- It does not promise jobs or results. Those depend on your practice and your market.
